Tinted Windows: Tinted Windows 4/5

What do you get when you combine the Smashing Pumpkins with Hanson and then for some added flavour you throw in some Cheap Trick and have the whole thing brought together with some Fountains of Wayne. In what has probably got to be rocks most unlikely super-group, Tinted Windows is a pop-rock band that has Taylor Hanson on lead vocals, James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins on guitars, Bun.E.Carlos from Cheap Trick on drums and Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne on bass guitar.

The result is pure pop-rock guitar joy. The band doesn't try to over achieve or aspire to put out anything particularly cerebral. Their music is simply joyous and refreshingly superficial, a throwback to the days of The Beach Boys with their sing along choruses and doo-wop harmonies. Even though the melodies are familiar and the soaring choruses might seem kind of kitschy, they thick, growling power chords from James Iha give this record some rock credibility. Sure the lyrics are cheesy but the tunes are irresistible and a perfect soundtrack to the summer.

When punk-pop is starting to get too polished and indie-rock too whiny, this record is a welcome change and a great way to simply enjoy music for what it is, something that makes you feel good and sing along.

Standout tracks 'Kind of a Girl' and 'Can't Get A Read On You'.
