Selena Gomez, the 25-year old pop singer, was recently picked as one of the subjects of Time Magazine’s “Firsts” cover story due to her being the first Instagram user to reach 100 million followers, a milestone achieved last September. Dubbed “The Queen of Instagram”, Gomez currently has 126 million followers. In the story, Selena has been picked up as “The Tastemaker”, an influencer for her generation on the popular social media platform.
Despite this recognition, Selena expressed relief for being raised without social media in an interview with the magazine. “I am glad I grew up in the time that I did. I think it’s really hard to be a kid now, especially with social media,” she told the magazine. “I can’t imagine what it would be like to grow up with that. It’s already difficult to get up every day and just feel good about yourself without seeing the highlights of everyone else’s life. That’s why I like being vulnerable with my fans on social media. I like that they’ve seen my mistakes. I try to use that as a way to connect with them. That’s all I can do. I hope that they know that strength doesn’t mean that you have to put on a facade. Strength is being vulnerable.”
She shared the Time cover on her Instagram with a note to her fans revealing her struggles and inspiration along with a Thank You to the magazine
Sometimes it's incredibly difficult to wake up every day knowing there is so much going on in the world. At times I feel selfish, I ask why, I ask how can this change? Will it actually ever change? I try to contribute my heart before anything because it can be so easy to lose the desire to have hope when sometimes all I want to be is angry. When I read about the beautiful women who wake up consciously every day to make a change, it inspires me to want to do so much more. Not really sure how I got so lucky @time but thank you for highlighting the power of what we can and will always strive to be. I believe in the goodness in the land of the living. I hope this is just the beginning of more change.
Selena is also featured as a cover star on Business of Fashion for their annual print edition. The cover is shot by Petra Collins, the visual artist who also directed the music video for her song “Fetish”. It features a photograph Collins took of Selena in a no make-up look.
The cover accompanies an interview with the pop star titled “Inside the Millennial Mind of Selena Gomez” in which Gomez reveals that although she is friendly and has many connections, she doesn’t have many friends. “I feel like I know everybody but have no friends. [Laughs] I have like three good friends that I can tell everything to, but I know everyone. I go anywhere and I’m like, “Hey guys, how’s it going?” And it feels great to be connected to people, but having boundaries is so important. You have to have those few people that respect you, want the best for you and you want the best for them. It sounds cheesy, but it’s hard.”
When asked about her advocacy for mental health awareness and if the issue is a defining one for this generation, she replied “I feel like it’s always been there. When I took time to learn about my feelings and my frustrations, and where things stemmed from, there was this huge fog lifted from my life because then I understood it. I think it should be a part of middle school.”
The interview dives into Selena’s Instagram fame (“I don’t even understand it”), her relationship with fashion (“There’s something that happens when I put on a beautiful piece of clothing.”) and her ongoing collaboration with American fashion brand Coach (“I want to work with people who want to work with me.”).
The full interview is available to read on Business of Fashion’s website.
